Master Sheng Yen (1931-2009) became known internationally for his meditation teaching, he belongs to the lineages of Chinese Zen Rinzai (Zen Hua Tou) and Soto (Mo-Zhao Zen). His greatest contribution in China lies in his efforts to bring Mo-Zhao Zen of Soto sect Wang Chi Ching (1091-1157) back to life. Master Sheng Yen enabled Zen Buddhism to spread to more than a dozen countries across the globe. In early days, he taught the Observation of breathing as well as Contemplation on Hua Tou, but in 1980, he began to teach Mo-Zhao Zen , and from 1998, he organized Zen retreats of 10, 14, 49 days. Master Sheng Yen personally presided over more than 10 intensive Mo-Zhao Zen retreats. The focus of this thesis is the Master Sheng Yen’s “Mo-Zhao Zen , ” and its theory and practice, with reference to his writings on Mo-Zhao Zen, such as: “Mo-Zhao”(《默照》), “Master Sheng Yen teaching Mo-Zhao Zen”(《聖嚴法師教默照禪 》), “Illuminating Silence: The Practice of Chinese Zen”(《如月印空:聖嚴法師默照禪講錄》), “ The Method of No-method: The Chan Practice of Silent Illumination ”(《無法之法:聖嚴法師默照禪法旨要》), “Footprints of the ox: Principles of the Chan Buddhist path taught by a modern Chinese Master”(《牛的印跡——禪修與開悟見性的道路》), and so on. By referring to his Zen concept of objective analysis and discussion, this paper aims to faithfully revealing the core teachings of Master Sheng Yen’s Mo-Zhao Zen.
