The objective of this article is to examine the influence and significance of the effects of the reconstruction of Taiwan’s funeral rites and rituals brought about by Dharma Drum Mountain’s (DDM) Buddha’s Name Recitation Group (BNG). The Taiwanese traditional funeral rites and rituals follow the Confucianist filial piety thought; however the continuation of these into our present-day society; is already mixed with many undesirable factors obstructing the ecology of our social environment. DDM’s Buddha’s Name Recitation Group upholds the ideal of Environmental Protection advocated by Venerable Sheng-Yan. The impetus starts with the Actionist and with the cooperation of the government, hopes to restore the new order of these funeral etiquette. The direction of the Recitation Group Reform takes the approach of protecting the ecology of the environment and constructing a funeral service that everybody can carry out personally on an individual basis. This Restructuring Strategy, not only urges the Taiwan funeral service to return to its original function; but through the Actionist’s movement reflect on the loss of the order of the funeral service and approve of the DDM’s ideal. This movement not only causes the funeral and burial industry to lost direction on authority of the funeral service, but also the family in mourning will not be completely in a submissive role. At the same time, this also brings the purification and the continual survival and the space for development of the Earth, which humanity depends on.
