This study is aimed to investigate the connotations of the important life events of a middle-aged woman in the course of her life and her subjective feelings and experiences of participating in the expressive-art-orientated life review. This study uses the methods of qualitative research, focusing on “life review”, and collects textual data through an integration of expressive-art creation and semi-structured in-depth interviews. In this study I interviewed a middle-aged woman and acquired the textual data, which was processed by thematic analysis and inter-subjective agreement of the interviewee. Then I give an exposition of the meanings behind the three dimensions of experience, namely “the connotations of the important life events”, “the subjective experiences of the life review”, and “the experiences of the life review conducted by the medium of expressive-art creation”. The connotations of the important life events of the interviewee are revealed in the following seven topics: (1) long-lasting friendship that supports each other on the way of life; (2) life has spiritual sustenance; the deep affection between aunt and niece leads to realization of the relatives’ kindness; (3) walking disability hinders her marriage; she would rather remain single than have a bad husband; (4) an experience of seeing a doctor destroyed her trust [in doctors]; she recovered her confidence by expressing her emotion; (5) maternal love is endless; to be her own self is the best reward; (6) understanding the silent paternal love and valuing the relationship between father and daughter; (7) love for a person extends even to the others; she situates herself awkwardly in the hope of family harmony. The life review demonstrates the meanings behind four subjective experiences: (1) starting the dynamic cycle of observing oneself inwardly; (2) accepting the imperfection of life, which is sublimated into a provision for self-transformation; (3) reconstructing the meanings of the life events; living a down-to-earth life; (4) seeing the existence of oneself; believing that things will get better tomorrow. The experiences of the life review conducted by the medium of expressive-art creation are unfolded in the following three topics: (1) creation arouses the potential for self-expression; (2) creation enhances the ability of self-awareness and deepens self-consciousness; (3) creation conduces to the inward self-integrity. This study has found that conducting life review at one’s middle age has three advantages: (1) the client can be aware of the meaning of life at one’s middle age; (2) the client has time to actualize the value of life, and to prepare for a successful old age; (3) to reduce the crisis of “stagnation” at one’s middle age and to bring about the development of “generativity”.This study further compares the major differences between the life review of the middle-aged people and that of the elderly people. It discovers that the life review of the middle-aged people mainly focuses on self-growth, seeing the meaning of life earlier, and assisting in successful ageing, while the life review of the elderly people is centered on self-adjustment and finding the meaning of life and death. Lastly, on the basis of the research result, I offer concrete suggestions to middle-aged people, relevant institutions of adult education, practitioners of adult counseling, and prospective relevant research.
