The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences and the effectiveness of how the elementary school volunteers participate in voluntary services and help promote reading projects. The study explores the motivations of the volunteers’participation and the process of how they help boost reading. What is more, it explicates the possible factors that may influence the operation of the volunteer groups, and the difficulties that these volunteer organizations may face while they are in operation; furthermore, it searches possible administrative supports from the school authorities and evaluates the effectiveness of how these volunteers promote reading. Hopefully, this study can provide reference for those who are organizing similar volunteer activities in elementary schools. Through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis, the study, based on qualitative research methods, reveals, analyzes, and then generalizes the real working experiences of the volunteer group members, the administrative staff in charge of the volunteer affairs, and the homeroom teachers who receive services from those volunteer workers. The study shows the following phenomenons. First, members of volunteers are mainly from parents of the children studying in Ta Tong Elementary School with their main motivations varying from person to person. Second, the volunteers promote reading for their children. Though the process may sometimes be toilsome, they get sweet returns too. Third, the factors that affect the operation of the volunteer groups are diverse, and they have met with both resistance and support while they are doing voluntary jobs. Last, the difficulties these volunteer organizations face are mainly from three factors; one is whether the school authorities pay attention to or cooperate with them, another is the operation modes of volunteer organizations are not clearly established, and the other is about volunteers themselves. Either the support from the principal, administrative units, or the teachers, or financial assistance from Parent Teacher Association, will have positive effects on boosting reading. Schools, teachers, and students benefit from the participation of the volunteers in varying degrees. Based on the above conclusions, with regard to the school in the case and the current status that the volunteers are promoting reading, some suggestions are given in the hope that volunteers can stick to their ideals and keep on studying so as to pursue higher service quality, that the school should pay attention to the valuable existence of volunteers, meeting the internal demand of volunteers and solving the problem of manpower shortage in volunteer groups, and that through professional management, the school can establish an operating mechanism of collaboration, strengthen the effective operations of volunteer groups, and promote the school with the aids from them.
