This study is intended to investigate the care giving experiences of the internal medicine nursing staff at the Veterans Hospital. The methods used included interviewing five participants as well as field studies and am in depth analysis of the situations that the staff encounters at work. The study indicates that the nursing staff at the Veterans Hospital is unique to other hospitals in the aspect of patients. When most of their patients are single veterans, managing patient take on a more structured and military-like style. The staff itself started to take on different roles that included health care taker, family member replacement, and source of affection. With the Internal Medicine unit, another layer of added stress is the hands on resuscitation of dying patients and sometimes the death of their own family members happening in front of them. In the case of a patient’s death, more mental stress is placed on the staff member directly involved. As the years of experience grows for the staff, the staff members learned to cherish their time spent with their patients, with their colleagues and their family. This allows the staff to offer more compassion and care when it comes to future patients. In the end, this study would also like to point out certain suggestions for hospitals and medical care centers everywhere.
