    Abstract:   “熱鬧、吵嘈“是傳統菜市場的空間代名詞,也代表地方生活特場欲殊的“聲音“,這”聲音“更是城市庶民文化的現象之呈現,集結了地方歷史、人文、生活場域等經驗傳承之地方生命力展現。   日治時代日人在台灣興建許多公共建築,其中因衛生問題和都市計畫,在1930年左右,先後在全台建200餘個公有市場,不僅改善了台灣的衛生環境,對當時城市規劃發展具有極大功能。嘉義市五大公有市場之一嘉義市西市場,因1906年嘉義震災後實施市區改正計畫而產生,其反應出傳統市場進入現代化城市過程,呈現對清代傳統地方生活場域之嘉義城西門外關廂市鎮歷史遺失的現象,關廂對當時及日後城市發展扮演重要角色。   本研究從嘉義市西市場在日據時代1912年開始興建,前後之變遷分五階段為探討;藉由嘉義城市空間變化,並以傳統市場與市街關係之演化,探究義市西市場與關廂境廟歷史場域脈絡,還原清代嘉義城西門外關廂境之地方生活場域。
      Festivity and noise is the symbol of traditional market as well as local living field. The voice demonstrate the phenomenon of citizen culture and presents the local energy succeeded by the experiences of local history, humanities, living field.   Japanese built a lot of public buildings, established more than 200 public markets serially for hygienic problem and city plan around 1930 that improved Taiwan’s healthy environment and city development. ChiaYi Western Market, one of five public market in ChiaYi City , began in 1906 after ChiaYi’s earthquake performing city improvement plan, reflects the evolution process of traditional market into modern city , presents traditional local life in the Qing Dynasty Field west of Chiayi town outside Guanxiang lost history of the phenomenon, Guanxiang future urban development at that time and play an important role.   In this study, Chiayi City, West Market under the Japanese colonial began construction in 1912, after five stages of change to explore; by spatial variation of Chiayi City, and the traditional relationship between the evolution of markets and streets, to explore the meaning of the city west market and Guanxiang border temple field history, context, to restore the Qing territory of Chiayi areas west of the city life outside Guanxiang field.
