The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between work stress and leisure behavior, physical and mental health of elementary school teachers in Chiayi County. There were 432 elementary school teachers in Chiayi County were selected by convenience sampling technique in 2009. The total number of usable data was 369 with the rate of the usable return of 85.42%. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent T-test, single factor analysis of variance, Pearson correlation and regression as well as accumulate statistical method were used for analysis in this study. The results were as followed:1. The overall work stress in elementary school teachers in Chiayi County was moderate. The overall leisure behavior was also moderate. While the overall physical and mental discomfort was below the moderate level. 2. Partial significant differences were found between work stress and different background variables, such as school size, teacher’s qualification, administrative position and the grades teacher taught. But no significant difference was found in terms of gender, age, marital status, and seniority of teaching and educational level. 3. Partial significant differences were found between leisure behavior and different background variables, such as age, administrative position in school and grades teacher taught. No difference was found between gender, marital status, seniority of teaching, educational level, school size, and teacher’s qualification.4. With regards to personal demographic and health variables, partial significant relationship was found in terms of age, while no significant relationship was found in terms of gender, marital status, seniority of teaching, educational level, school size, type of teachers, teacher’s qualification and the grades teachers taught.5. Partial negative significant relationship was found between work stress and leisure behavior. The work stress can be significantly predicated by leisure behavior. Positive significant relationship was found between health and work stress. The physical and mental health can be significantly predicated by “school administration support”, “work load”, “student teaching methods” and “personal relationship”. A partial negative relationship was found also between leisure behavior and physical and mental health. The physical and mental health can be significantly predicated by “resting activity” and “social activity”.
