In more than one century, Dunhuang manuscripts have shaped the development of many fields. One of the most significant groups of manuscripts is the collection of transformation texts. The meaning, origin, format, and its religious implication of the transformation texts have been studied since the discovery of these manuscripts. As far as I know, there are more than 1500 articles published in the field. Scholars have focused on the linguistic features of these transformation texts, besides the subjects as I just listed above. Many subjects have to a large extent advanced our understanding the history of Chinese literature, especially the development of the vernacular literature. Numerous textbooks on the history of Chinese literature such as Zheng Zhenduo’s textbook as well as others remained a chapter for the transformation texts especially when they discussed literature in the Tang dynasty. Nevertheless, scholars could not reach agreement about the nature of these texts.
My project will attempt to offer a comprehensive investigation on the transformation texts by focusing on some controversial issues. This project will lay out the main arguments by scholars in the field, analyze their strengths and weaknesses, evaluate the sources these studies used, and eventually present some findings to set a foundation for future research.
