After the second change in the ruling party, the domestic media in Taiwan on cross-strait news and mainland China’s news have proceeded to a phase of competition and cooperation. This was unprecedented in recent 20 years since 1987 when two journalists of Independent Evening News break through the government’s ban on visiting mainland to make reports. Media dealt with cross-strait news and mainland China’s news in the past usually focus too much on national, policy, media organization and other structural factors, overlooking media’s autonomy during the process of production. This study tries to quote from Pierre Bourdieu’s Field Theory to place the viewpoint back to the media itself as a pioneer. By focusing on cross-strait news and mainland China’s news since 1987 till now, I will demonstrate how media use economic capital, social capital, cultural capital and symbolic capital to earn a hegemony discourse on the field of cross-strait news and mainland China’s news.
