Chia-yi Chiao-chih Pottery is one of the most precious treasures of art in Taiwanese ceramics. How to name it properly, however, is not settled for years. The Japanese once considered it came from Vietnam, previously called Chiao-chih. However, many experts later confirmed that Vietnam was not really the origin but could not be certain about where was either. After years of research, the author would like to argue that Chia-yi Chiao-chih Pottery was influenced by Sancai (three-colored ware) in southern China, which originated from Tian-keng plain Sancai in zhangzhou-kiln system. For the reasons stated above, the so-called Chai-yi Chiao-chih Pottery should be renamed. Since Chia-yi has been the center of Taiwanese Sancai Chiao-chih Pottery, the author suggests one to replace the term “Chia-yi Chiao-chih Pottery” by “Chia-chih Pottery” to acknowledge Chia-yi region and to associate with the original term.
