As the aging society has arrived, Taiwan’s government has proposed many policies in social welfare and housing construction to meet the needs of aging society. Based on the housing policy, government-instituted elderly housing operated by private agency is a production for ensuring the living space of senior citizen. This study was conducted at a government-instituted elderly housing operated by private agency, the Yang-Ming elderly housing. Based on the body and living space concepts proposed by Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Lefebvre, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted among twenty seven senior citizen and the interactions between senior citizen and living space were recorded by participant observation. Information about the senior citizen‘s space perceptions and living experiences was collected. Through the senior citizen‘s life experiences at the interior and exterior space of the Yang-Ming elderly housing, the new meanings of the space was generated. Study results showed the meaning of space at the elderly housing could be represented through senior citizen’s bodies. The activities carried out by the senior citizen could build up the connections between their past life experiences and their current living space. The concepts of “home” and “the space of home” perceived by senior citizen could be represented through their citizen’s bodies. In senior citizen’s daily lives, their bodies would keep the habits of passing certain paths and certain points. For creating the sense of personal area and the sense of familiarity, senior citizen would also connect their current life experiences with their past life experiences unconsciously. Based on the information provided by the senior citizen, the need of exterior living space was associated with the daily activity frequency. At the elderly housing, the meaning of space was different for different citizen. The meaning of living space could be changed by citizen’s living experiences and activities. Their perceptions of their bodies extend the activity patterns which was adequate for living at the space. The value of space lies on the existence of human beings. Human beings’ utilization of the space makes the space valuable. The results of this study suggest that senior citizen’s life experiences should be addressed when designing or planning the space of elderly housing.
