Most of the auspicious imagery used to decorate Taiwanese temples has both constructive and symbolic purpose. They are like antique 3D books which represent the traditional values of loyalty, respect, camaraderie, and justice, or ancient sayings and well-wishes. The traditional imagery used in temples are derived and composed from natural forms, using elements from animals, plants, objects, gods and humans, they are closely linked to daily activities of life, and richly endowed with meaning. The reason why folk art is so approachable is precisely because its sources lie in daily life. The study attempts to explore the ornamentation of lucky symbols adopted in temple color painting utilizing the archival review method, field survey method, graphic analysis method and statistical analysis method, free association inventive method, practical design method to conduct the study to analyze and compile the findings into a database, from which to draw the design elements and reconfigure them into meaningful patterns that can be applied in temple tourism giftware. The thesis aims to explore adopting the lucky patterns used in temple color painting in modern lifestyle product design, and the study's survey findings revealed, (1)The expression modes of the lucky patterns in temple color painting are comprised of six methods, which are direct comprehension, configural or phonetic suggestion, transferal extension, imaginary empowerment, legendary affiliation, and a combination of a number of which. (2)The pattern designs can be divided into four major categories of figurines, divine beasts and animals, floral and fruits, and utensils. (3)Adapting the characteristics of the lucky pattern as the design element for tourism souvenirs. (4)The study's designed survey findings showed that design theme one of an amulet with an intertwining vine garnered a 93% level of recognition, design theme two of a vessel with twin splashing dragons foster a 98% level of recognition, and design theme three of an amulet praying for good fortune and fortuity garnered an 88% level of recognition. The study findings show that all three themes do reflect the lucky emblems and the temple ambience. The aim of this research is to increase the design value of traditional design imagery on tourist products, and provide a reference for the industry, government, and academia for the design of cultural creative products.
