The study tracks back to Wangliau where my big family lived for decades since my ancestor first settled in Taiwan. It is also my personal journey to build individual subjectivity from picturing the past, present and future of this small fishing village. The main idea is to study the landscape diachronic transformation, in order to know how the change of the society at large affects on local alliance, which breeds those changeable, or unchangeable cultural views and their value system. In the end, it discusses the future development of the fishing village from the perspective of fishermen’s daily lives and their local identity. This study reveals the role of place and the situation of the fishing village in Taiwan nowadays. The study collects Wangliau local data, including interviews and the information of the space transition. It is also the first diary about my family----the Dai family. The study adopts qualitative method, literature reviews, and the information from several workshops I took part in. The study starts from the discussion about identity, including place identity and collective action. The content begins with the research structure (Chapter one) and my hometown’s background (Chapter two). The third chapter describes the industrial development of Wangliau, including the salt industry and the oyster industry, and how the natural space turns into developed space by human beings and the development of the industry. People’s work and daily life space deeply interconnect with the development of local industry. Chapter four deals with local religion and natural disaster. This study concludes that the ongoing reconstruction of place identity is a sustainable process of political, economic, social, cultural, and even environmental changes. The result will reflect on the transition of space. The final chapter concludes the effect that development of the local place has on place identity and the future of the place. Hopefully, it will contribute to the solution to balance industrial development and place identity.
