The major purpose of this research project is to help community residents appreciate the beauty of traditional crafts through education, to make them realize the relationship between the cultural environment and individual living environments, and to recognize their own cultures and thus to respect the cultures of others. To achieve this aim, the research takes local traditional crafts as its focal point, using lifelong education and learning as an instrument, in particular the arts courses at the Civic University in Chiayi City. As part of the thesis, art courses that incorporate community culture are designed and developed to provide a model for the preservation and transmission of traditional culture. Based on the lines of thought outlined above, the thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter One is the Introduction. It explains the motivation, objectives, scope and limitations, as well as the methodology and structure, of the thesis. It also contains a review of relevant literature and key words. Chapter Two provides discussion on three areas of relevant theories. Firstly, it delineates the origin of community civic universities, their educational rationales and the characteristics of their course planning. The last decade has witnessed the mushrooming of community civic universities as institutions of lifelong learning and education in Taiwan. Secondly, the chapter traces the development of traditional crafts in Taiwan, from the perspectives of their meaning and early history, the conditions under Japanese occupation and their current situation. Thirdly, it provides a brief discussion of the relevant theories of course design, such as those of multiculturism and society-orientated theory. It then integrates the essences of various course design models such as Objective Model, Process Model and Situational Model to form the base of the course design of this research. Chapters Three and Four are the analyses of the case study. In these two chapters, Chiayi City is the focal point. Through literature review and in-depth interviews, it investigates the cultural milieu of Chiayi City and the two cultural industries, stone carved monkeys and Koji pottery, two industries that are distinctively rich and local. The origin of the Chiayi Civic University and its organizational structure are then analysed, as well as the characteristics and current conditions of its course design. Chapter Five is devoted to the development and design of suitable arts courses. Based on the two themes of Koji pottery and stone carved monkeys, it devises a series of art educational courses that can lead people in the community to a better understanding of the community’s cultural resources. The devised art courses are then finalized after consultation with the relevant specialists and scholars in the field. Chapter six is the conclusion. It provides some perspectives and suggestions as to how best to preserve the heritage of traditional crafts. |
