When the nation-state of western Europe have been cooperating and constructing the European Union in the process of European Integration, national minorities of member states have become more visible, vocal and demanding of greater independence. By the treaties and policies of European Union, regions may come to rival or even replace states. By growing demands for greater decentralization, Catalonia has emerged as important actors in politics and policy of European Union. In Spain, integration has never been complete, secessionist movements have long been active and call self-determination threatens a redrawing of boundaries of member states. There are demands for independence or devolution from Catalonia and Basques. The main sources of this thesis are base on the publications, official document of European Union. As well as gather and refer to books, dissertations, periodicals, publications which are from National Central Library, NHU Library, NCCU Library and Nottingham Trent University Library etc. Besides, this research also utilizes the data obtained from the Internet. The thesis exerts the methodology of historical research to analyze the transformation of national identity in Catalonia. As well as, this research utilizes such as document analysis, comparison and induction to generalize a conclusion from the collection of data, policies, documents and instances. This thesis is divided into six chapters: 1. Introduction; 2. The Significance of European Integration for National Identity; 3. The Effect of European Integration for National Identity; 4. The Development of National Identity in Catalonia; 5. The Analysis of National Identity in Catalonia; 6. Conclusion. Finally, the conclusion of this thesis can be summarized as below: In the process of European integration, member states lose their distinctive political identity but the cultural identity of minorities is strengthened. European integration has helped redefine the relationship of the parts between minorities and national governments. European Union is an important source of investment and of support for minority cultures and in some cases this has given more confidence to nationalist movements such as Catalonia. Catalonia feels less dependent on the support of the state government. Although the appearance of the European Union helped to extend the view of Catalonia, Catalonia still has cooperated with Spain and works with other regions of Europe. Besides, Catalonia government has developed an extremely active foreign policy which has two strategic aspirations: to promote and strengthen Catalonia’s positions on international markets and to defend the interests and the participation of the regions in the European Union. In the future, Catalonia hope can be transformed into state of Europe by European integration.
