The topic of this study is to examine the spiritual experiences in Ling-Gi (mediums), using the hermeneutic-phenomenological methodology, by collecting data through either field observations or in-depth interviews with two subjects, focusing the following aspects: the subject themselves, descriptions of their spiritual experiences and the process of the journey, namely the experiences of their “encountering” and “relating to” the spirits, and by analyzing the deeper meaning of their descriptions as well as their interpretations to better understand the real meaning of the spiritual experience of these subjects. This study finds that the spiritual experiences of the subjects can be seen in two stages, one transferring from the profane into the sacred states, another from the sacred into the profane states. The former includes the primordial experiences the subjects have while first encountering their “master(s),” which contain from physical sensations changes and process. With these changes, especially the changes in spiritual identity, a conflict with one’s own personality along with its splits arises as a result. The latter contains the conflicts the subjects experienced with their masters while the human-god relationship has been established, which ranges from the struggle between the secular and the ideal to the disharmony between one’s own identity and the super-ego. By and large, this study focuses on the stages while the subjects literally turn into the mediums, their primordial experiences are being analyzed and interpreted. In addition, from this study two suggestions are raised, one regards its application while another academic research so that they can be a refence to those who have an interest in spiritual practice. Hopefully, the outcome of the study can one day be involved in a dialogue with the local religious research.
