The Hinoki Village is a historic-site-turned-cultural-park where the dormitory of Chiayi Forest District Office located, that has been transformed to showcase its rich historical characteristics and Japanese architectural style. During the Japanese rule, the dormitory of Office of Agricultural Production under Office of the Taiwan Governor-General was built here. The complex is adjacent to the Beimen Train Station in Chiayi City and owned by the Forestry Bureau, Council of Agriculture now. It was opened to the public since 2015 and gradually became a popular place of leisure and recreation. It is now a must-go tourist spot. Chiayi City, the capital of Zhuluo County, a political division in Taiwan during Qing Dynasty rule of the island originally took its name from the aboriginal tribe who lived there: the Hoanya. A diversity of ethnic groups at that time could be seen. Having been through a couple of conflicts with rebellions, Zhuluo County was renamed Chiayi County during the time of Qianlong Emperor and later became a castle built with lime-sand-clay mixed concrete. In the Japanese colonial period, railways were constructed for logging, making Chiayi the transport hub for timber, while the Beimen Train Station was the first stop of Alisan Forest Railway where logging facilities and loggers’ houses gathered around. The station, the dormitory, the Forest Club and other buildings could all be found here in Beinmen. Not long after the Japanese left, Chiayi County was renamed Chiayi City by the new government and the logging industry kept prospering. Beimen area was all for forestry transport then and by the time when logging was suspended, it has become the starting point of the railway trip and a popular tourist spot. Beimen that boomed due to the Alisan Forest Railway was marked as a highlight area in the urban planning process. It came alive again thanks to the Forestry Cultural Park project initiated by the Forestry Bureau, turning from a dot in the city transport network to a tourist attraction. It is the first stop of Alisan Forest Railway and also connects with the Chiayi Train Station, showing its importance not only as a spot for recreational activities but a transportation hub for tourists. This article is based on Kevin Lynch’s theory on the Image of the City and the research on overlapping of history and cultural space, aiming to explore the positioning of Chiayi City Forestry Cultural Park in terms of city image and the possibility of extension of traveling space. It is also planning to work on local recognition on space of an old town that might arise in time as well as the modernity of historic space from Norberg-Schulz’s concept of Genius Loci, discussing the role of Hinoki Village in Taiwan’s forestry culture and the feasibility for it to become a transportation hub for tourists in Chiayi. This article also sets to go through different kinds of opinions on how to optimize Chiayi’s space and boils down to the characteristic of local tourism industry, analyzing the potential development of tourism corridor in Chiayi.
