許多人會認為永生當然是值得期待的，甚至可以說永生或許是人們內心最期待能實現的願望。但威廉斯卻以〈馬克普洛斯檔案〉為例，論證永生帶來的最終結果並非是祝福，由於永生會不斷地重複生活中各種類似的情節，最後的結果會令人感到了無生趣，並且漸漸陷於因永生而無法結束無趣生活的夢魘中。許多哲學家包括羅撒提、費雪，以及布魯克納等人並不同意威廉斯的觀點，而提出各種反駁的意見，這些反駁的方式包括從個人特質、興趣的內容以及對興趣的動機等等。在本篇論文中，我將證明這些反駁的觀點並不成立。然而，我雖不同意羅撒提等人的觀點，卻也不表示我贊成威廉斯的論題。反之，我認為威廉斯的論題是否成立是可疑的，原因在於這個論題反映的並不是真正永生的狀態，而是有可能死亡的持續延長生命的狀態而已。 Most people agree that immortality is certainly worth to expect, and it can even be said that immortality is perhaps the most desired desire for those people. But Williams proposed ‘The Markopulos Case’ as an example to demonstrate that the end result of eternal life is not a blessing because the form of eternal life is inevitable to repeat similar scenarios, so at the end life will be bored and it must be a nightmare if you can't terminate it. Many philosophers, including Rosati, Fischer, and Bruckner, didn't agree with Williams and developed various rebuttals. These rebuttals include the diversity of personal characters, the content of interests and the motivation for interest, etc.. In this paper, I will argue that these rebuttals don't hold. However, it does not mean that I agree with Williams. On the contrast, I think it is questionable whether Williams' Thesis holds because the thesis does not reflect the state of true immortality rather the state of prolonged life which might die.
