Background and Purpose: At present, treatment expectations of patients undergoing lung cancer treatment cannot be fully met. As a result, the personalized comprehensive treatment commonly promoted has been gradually incorporated into various complementary and alternative therapies. In this study, a questionnaire survey was used to study the use of complementary and alternative therapies and associated factors in patients with lung cancer, and to investigate its effect on lung cancer symptoms. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was used in this study. Purposive sampling using a self-designed questionnaire was carried out on lung cancer patients at an academic hospital located in the south of Taiwan. Results: The results showed that 63% of patients diagnosed with lung cancer used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). In addition, survey results indicated that patients who used targeted cancer therapy or those who have used CAM prior to the diagnosis of cancer was significantly associated with CAM use after diagnosis of cancer. The most common types of CAM used were taking nutritional supplements, manipulative and body-based therapies, and Chinese medicine. Results also showed that patients mostly obtained information about CAM from friends and relatives (55.3%). Furthermore, 81.6% of patients have told their physician about their use of CAM. Moreover, 84.2% of patients reported no obvious effects of CAM, however, 94.1% of the respondents indicated that they would continue to use CAM. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the use of CAM in lung cancer patients is very common. Medical staff also tend to provide relevant information on CAM in a timely manner. In addition, because current anti-cancer treatment methods have less side effects, patients are physically better off compared to before. As a result, the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is covered by medical insurance, has become more popular. To increase the effectiveness of cancer treatment, these findings suggest that physicians should recommend patients to use TCM as a complementary treatment. |
