Democracy is now recognized as a universal value and an accomplishment that Taiwan takes pride in. However, Taiwan's democracy has shown a retrogressive trend in recent years. Freedom of speech, freedom of publication and discourse on academic subjects and freedom of assembly and association are the cornerstones of a democracy. Nevertheless, Taiwan is being increasingly persecuted by such pretexts as "false news," "red media" and "national security." Even more so, the spirit of democracy lies in the people having a say in policies, but in Taiwan they are unable to decide on policies despite the results of referendums. Why is it that no one is putting a halt to democratic regression in Taiwan? This paper advocates that in addition to a lack of interest towards political affairs, there is no profound recognition of democratic values. Democracy has sunken down to an excuse for democratic correctness, encasing anti-Chinese racism that incites hatred against China's history and culture. In this paper, this inference is verified through the online questionnaire survey.
