The theory and practice of Venerable Master Hsing Yun's “Four Insights of Emptiness” is a manifestation of his application of Buddhism to daily life, which incorporates the idea of going beyond notions in the Diamond Sūtra. Throughout his life, Venerable Master Hsing Yun practiced his life perspective of viewing “nothing as something, retreat as progress, the multitude as the self, and emptiness as happiness.” The practical actualization in his life is this Buddhist lifestyle which expands from the emptiness doctrine in the Diamond Sūtra; the four principles proposed by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, “to give without notions, to liberate with no notion of self, to live without abiding, and to cultivate without attainment,” are the core teachings of the Diamond Sūtra. The author's analysis of the “Four Insights of Emptiness” comes from Venerable Master Hsing Yun's interpretation of the Diamond Sūtra, which translates the four notions of the Diamond Sūtra into modern language, and extends the true meaning of Buddhism where there is infinite merit in giving without notions; supreme compassion in living in the absence of a self; true freedom in living without abiding; and true attainment in practicing without gain. This is the same philosophy as Venerable Master Hsing Yun's saying of adopting a world-transcending spirit in handling worldly affairs. Here, the world-transcending spirit refers to emptiness, and worldly affairs refer to existence. This is Venerable Master Hsing Yun's endeavor in liberating beings through the notion of viewing “nothing as something.” And from this concept began Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s lifelong practice of the Four Insights of Emptiness.
