The main research objective of this study is library space aesthetics. This study focuses on investigating space aesthetics and facilities planning of libraries by using theoretical analysis of formal aesthetics and symbolic aesthetics. Research objective is to study libraries’ landscape architecture, space planning, and library users’ aesthetic reaction, degree of perception, and visual evaluation on libraries built in the last decade in Taiwan. In literature reviews, this study explores the architectural history of library in both Western and Eastern countries. It specifically concentrates on analyzing the projects of three prestigious architects: Ieoh Ming Pei, Tadao Ando, and Toyo Ito. Based on the literature reviews, author selected fifteen libraries in Taiwan to be research cases to study each library’s history, current situation, spatial characteristics, and space planning. Followed by the research cases, author selected 30 pictures of these 15 libraries with opinions of six art experts and utilized these 30 pictures to design the questionnaire for the quantitative analysis. Title of the questionnaire is “The impact of library space aesthetics on people’s visual perception of library.” The questionnaire consists of proportion and scale, shape, spaciousness, sense of order, color, illumination, material, decoration and visual effects, naturalness, and style. It was designed to test people’s perception on aesthetics response, degree of preference, and space aesthetic assessment; it also explored the correlations among those three constructs. Author also conducted the interviews with librarians to have a better understanding on library’s space planning and library users’ reaction on space aesthetics. The main purpose of this dissertation is to understand the situation of space planning and space aesthetics of those libraries which were only built in the last decade in Taiwan. By using the literature review and interview results, the study also provides an analysis on how library’s space planning influences users’ reaction. It also analyzes the factors in space planning. According to the research results, the author will provide recommendations to libraries, architects, associated government departments, and follow-associated researchers in the future.
