然而,南郊竹溪沿岸空間每一分一吋土地的signifier(能指),無一不是在representation(再現),人存活下來的處境與力量。 In this thesis, information about the targeted research geographical area-the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard was gathered on site, rather than gathered from rational analysis in the laboratory. For without field understanding, the research will only be a theory. Therefore, in the process of investigation, things were observed from a local point of view, rather an outsider, in order that one may respect the “field experience” existing in the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard. The “field experience” is a presentation of all kinds of human activities, including both spiritual and non-spiritual. The main points of this thesis lie in describing the observations and feelings upon constructing that time and space during field investigation. The purpose of the research is to reveal the relations existing between Tainan city citizens and the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard. The relations concern the citizens’ emotions placing upon the graveyard as time changes. It is hoped that through analysis the emotions and feelings of Tainan city citizens during their spiritual offering can be clarify. To understand the chronological change of the structure, both physical and spiritual, of the graveyard, several aspects were examined, including history, memory, activities, legend, symbolic figures and culture. It is found that the graveyard is not the core where the citizens’ activities occurred. The collective memories about the graveyard are too far away from the life of modern Tainan citizens. The modern Tainan citizens regard themselves as outsiders from the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard. Their only connection with the graveyard is ancestor worship during Tomb Sweeping Festival. Thus, it is afraid that the death related culture of the graveyard would be devoured by the economically interest space which created as a result of mass production of city public facilities. However, the families were observed to be completely spiritually devoted to their lost ones during the burial ceremony, their imagines entering a world created by the religious ceremony, thus their uncertain fear about death was settled in that world. This indicates that the living people can control their images about death. It can be seen that every square inch of the Ton-Pon-Chen graveyard is a signifier. That is, the religious ceremonies reoccurring on the graveyard have social functions and religious functions. The ceremonies were able to comfort the hearts of man and give the ones who lost the courage and strength to live on. It is hope that the conclusions of the research can offer one way of thought for those groups or individuals who in the future would seek to operate and rebuilt southern suburb of Tainan City, along the banks of the Bamboo Stream. |
