摘要: | 慈航法師,早年失却怙恃,十八歲於泰寧縣峨嵋峰禮拜自忠老和尚為師,出家後曾參訪中國各大叢林道場,親近諦閑、度厄、圓瑛等長老,又遇太虛大師調教。由於幼年也曾學儒家經典,但識字不多,發心向上學習,學而不厭的精神,在長期接受諸多善知識、大師之開示,暨數度閉關,專心研讀藏經,佛學博深、教義教理通達。 民國十九年遠赴東南亞各國創辦諸多中國佛教學會及教育機構,大力推廣太虛大師的「人生佛教」理念,視太虛為師,發願「以師志為己志」,致力弘法度眾。民國三十七年,應中壢圓光寺妙果長老之請,渡海來台主辦台灣佛學院。復經台北縣汐止鎮靜修院達心、玄光兩位住持協助募款建設彌勒內院,安置二十多位大陸隨軍來台的僧青年們。在內院期間,每次慈航講授大乘經論,法緣殊勝,特別是這些來台的僧青年前往聆聽,後來各有成就。慈航法師為人坦率、胸襟寬厚,道德及涵養至深,令人由衷敬仰。 慈航法師的喜捨精神,對錢財捨得布施,而法布施方面更甚財布施,凡前來求法的人,不論人數多寡均為說法。民國三十八年至四十年間,大陸僧青年初到台灣,人地生疏、居無處所,三餐無著落情況下,慈航法師保護二十多人僧青年,其廣大慈悲心,將他們安置並教育佛學,也鼓勵他們多學英文,以利將來弘法到世界各國。這些法師在慈航法師細心照顧指導下,如今在台灣佛教界已成為弘法的菁英,如自立法師主編「佛教青年」,心然法師主編「中國佛教」,清月法師主編「人生」,星雲法師創辦佛光山推行人間佛教思想。會性法師曾接受慈航法師教導,成為台灣佛教界有名學僧,完成了《大藏會閱》二百萬的著作。這許多優秀僧青年,都是慈航法師慈悲偉大精神感召,在台灣僅六年,培育出如此多的弘法人才,不僅實現了太虛大師的「人生佛教」理念,慈航一生弘法度眾生,將台灣佛教導向繁榮進步,為台灣佛教界留下弘法人才種子。 Master Ci-Hang lost his parents in his childhood, and had learned after Master Zi-Zhong before he became a monk at the age of eighteen. Then he visited the great temples in China to get close to Ti-Hsien, Tu-E, Yuan-Ying and other seniors. He also met Master Tai-Hsu and aceepted his instruction. Ci-Hang learned eagerly and deligently for a long time. For several times, he concentrated on studying Buddhist scriptures in a private chamber. He then was good at the teachings and learning of Buddhism. In 1930, Ci-Hang went to Southeat Asia to set up a number of Chinese Buddhist institutes and educational institutions there and vigorously promote the concept of Humanistic Buddhism originated by Master Tai-Hsu. Ci-Hang determined to fulfill the concept of Humanistic Buddhism all his life. In the year of 1948, entreated by Master Mia-Guo at Yuan-Kuang Temple in Taiwan, Ci-Hang came to Taiwan to host Taiwan Buddhist Institute. After that, he settled down more than twenty young monks at Mi-Le Nei-Yuan, which was built with financial support from two nuns in Taipei County. Ci-Hang gave lessons on Mahāyāna not only to the public but to the young monks, who achieved something great later. Ci-Hang was so frank, broad minded, virtuous and well-cultivated that everyone respected him sincerely . With willing-to-give spirit, Master Ci-Hang didn't follow the prohibition of no taking money like a Theravāda monk. Instead, whenever he received some money, he gave the money to help people in need or to help the development of Buddhism. Ci-Hang was willing to give money as well as give Dharma. No matter to one person or to ten persons, he took the same attitude to give Buddhist lessons. During the period from 1949 to 1951, Master Ci-Hang concerned about the young monks from China. He took good care of their daily life, educated them with Mahāyāna and Humanistic Buddhism, and encouraged them to pay more attention to learn English for future use. As time flies, the young monks have become famous masters in Buddhism and have preached Buddhism all over the world. All the brilliant young monks were inspired by Master Ci-Hang's great spirit. Staying in Taiwan for only six years, MasterCi-Hang educatd so many great Buddhist monks and realized the concept of Humanistic Buddhism from Master Tai-Hsu. |
