Kunshen, a huge sea creature in Chinese folklore, has been influenced by the myths, literature, and topography of Taiwan. In this paper we investigate the relationship between the image of Kunshen and the myths relating to the coastal wetlands of southeastern Taiwan known as the Taijiang Inland Sea and the Daofeng Inland Sea.The related myths describing the island of Taiwan as riding on the back of a whale originated prior to the siltification and disappearance of the Taijiang Inner Sea. In this investigation of the complex and interdependent relationship between humans and whales and between the Kunshen and islands, we examine the prototypes of the Kunshen myths and the narrative structure of the myths describing whales landing on shore.
